Product Specification

Grobet USA checkering files are designed to create precise crosscut checkering patterns in metal, making them ideal for custom knife making, gunsmithing and detailed metalworking projects. Whether you're adding decorative detail to a bolster or improving grip on a guard or backspacer, these checkering files produce clean, uniform results.

Manufactured to Grobet's renowned quality standards, these metal checkering files are parallel in width and gently tapered in thickness for greater control during use. The overcut runs parallel to the file edges, while the upcut is positioned at 90 degrees, allowing accurate crosshatch patterns to be cut into metal surfaces.

Available in 20, 30 and 40 lines per inch, each file produces a different checkering density to suit your project requirements.

Grobet Checkering File FAQs

What is a Grobet checkering file?

A Grobet checkering file is a specialist file used to cut evenly spaced lines into metal surfaces. By crossing these lines at opposing angles, makers can create traditional checkering patterns that improve grip and add decorative detail to custom knife components.

What is the difference between a 20 LPI, 30 LPI and 40 LPI checkering file?

The difference is the number of lines per inch (LPI) the file cuts.

  • A 20 LPI checkering file creates a coarser, more aggressive pattern.
  • A 30 LPI checkering file offers a balance between grip and appearance.
  • A 40 LPI checkering file produces a finer, more detailed pattern often used on presentation and collector knives.

Where can checkering be added on a custom knife?

Checkering is commonly added to knife bolsters, guards, backspacers and other metal fittings. It can be used to improve grip, enhance aesthetics or add a handcrafted finishing touch to a custom knife build.
