Mokume-gane, or Mokume, is a type of Japanese metalworking process that uses colored, mixed metals forming a billet to produce a distinctive, layered pattern. The metals used in the Mokume procedure are nonreactive and inknife making allow for a beautiful knife that is easier to clean and maintain. These include nickel silver and copper, while tri-color styles add brass to the mix. Mokume should not be confused with Damascus metal, which is made of different materials and overall quality. Mokume is a typically a longer-term option for beginners and professional knife makers. This Japanese-style metal is available intwist, random, raindrop, andladder pattern types. Some styles require a special order as they may take longer to produce. Mokume steel comes in 12” segments of varying heights and widths.
